The local take
Hemingway's is a French bistro and cocktail bar at 48 North Steyne, across the road from the beach. French restaurateurs Sonia and Emmanuel took it over in the winter of 2014 and run it in the spirit of a Montmartre bistro, where coffee and cocktails matter as much as the food.
The bar makes a full cocktail list, Hemingway daiquiri included, and the wine list runs from pinot noir to Champagne. To eat with your drink there are bistro plates such as steak tartare, chicken liver parfait and salmon rillettes with baguette.
It serves breakfast, lunch and dinner on most days and is closed on Tuesdays. Hours vary by day, so check before you go. Upstairs there's a private room for up to 50 people. It's the grown-up choice on the beachfront for a cocktail before dinner, or an early evening with a view of the sea.
