The local take
Hemingway's is a French bistro and cocktail bar at 48 North Steyne, across the road from the beach. Sonia and Emmanuel, French restaurateurs, took it over in the winter of 2014 and run it in the style of a Montmartre bistro, with coffee and cocktails as important as the food.
Breakfast runs until 11.30am, with dishes like pancakes with fresh fruit and whipped cream. Lunch follows, and dinner starts at 6pm. The bistro classics include steak tartare, chicken liver parfait and salmon rillettes, served with baguette, and raclette is on offer too. The bar makes a full cocktail list, including the Hemingway daiquiri, and the wine list runs to Champagne.
Hours vary by day, so check the website. It's closed on Tuesdays. Book online. Upstairs there's a private dining room for up to 50 people, and groups of 8 or more can book a function. Breakfast with a beach view or an early dinner as the light fades are the best times to go.
