The local take
Belgrave Cartel is a café by day and an Italian restaurant and bar by night at 6 Belgrave Street, a short walk from the wharf. It was founded by local brothers of Italian heritage and opened in 2011 in a converted shopfront. The dimly lit, European-style room is modelled on the neighbourhood cafés and bars of Paris.
In the evening the bar pours cocktails, wine and beer, and the kitchen turns Italian: pappardelle with beef ragù, ricotta gnocchi and spaghettoni with clams, then bistecca or market fish, and tiramisu to finish. The crowd is mostly locals, many of whom have been coming for years.
It serves dinner from Tuesday to Sunday, and on Mondays it closes after lunch. Book through OpenTable or SevenRooms. It's a good choice for a night that starts as one drink and turns into dinner.
