The local take
The Gopher is a basement bar at 40 The Corso, which opened on 15 May 2026 in the space that was the Old Manly Boatshed for 38 years. It's styled as an early-1900s Irish bar from New York's Hell's Kitchen, named after the Gopher Gang, and inspired by New York's Dead Rabbit.
Creative direction comes from Matt Clifton, who also created The Cumberland, and the operators are linked to Donny's and InSitu. On tap there's Guinness and Kilkenny plus a rotating UK beer of the month, with most pints around $16. There's wine from $13 and a list of signature cocktails.
It opens at 5pm daily, and it's walk-in only for now. Bands play at weekends until late, and the room is also used for comedy, jazz and karaoke. Head down the steep stairs if you want a dark, late, music-first night on the Corso.
