The local take
Bonsai is a contemporary Japanese izakaya on the lower level of 43-45 East Esplanade, opposite Manly Wharf, run by 4 Pines Brewing Co. The fit-out is inspired by the tiny bars and alleys of Tokyo's Golden Gai.
The menu, from the 4 Pines executive chef, uses traditional Japanese techniques with a modern twist, and the dishes are designed for sharing over beer, cocktails, sake or wine. There's a two-hour Japanese bottomless brunch with 4 Pines beers and selected cocktails, and a banquet menu for groups of four or more from Wednesday to Sunday.
It's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. From Wednesday to Friday it opens from 5pm, and at weekends from midday. It's right by the ferry, so it suits dinner before the boat home, or a long weekend brunch with friends.
