Bonsai is 4 Pines' Japanese izakaya, on the lower level of the brewery's East Esplanade building across from Manly Wharf. The fit-out borrows from the tiny bars of Shinjuku's Golden Gai, and 4 Pines executive chef Joji Shikama's menu is built for sharing over a beer poured from the brewery upstairs: yakitori and wagyu off the grill, gyoza, karaage, takoyaki and salmon sashimi, with most plates between $10 and $26.

Banquets run $49 a head for groups of four or more, or $69 for the premium version from two, Wednesday to Sunday. Weekday happy hour is 4–6pm with $8.50 4 Pines pints and house wine, and Saturdays bring a two-hour Japanese bottomless brunch at 12pm and 2:30pm.
