The local take
Sushi Waka is a casual, izakaya-style Japanese restaurant at 155 Pittwater Road, in the quieter streets north of the Corso and a block back from the beach. It opened in October 2013 and has built a loyal local following on consistency and fair prices.
The menu is long: sashimi and sushi rolls, bento boxes, noodles, gyoza and tempura, plus Japanese curries made with the kitchen's own curry pastes, mixed in small batches. Serves are generous and the food is well presented. There's a dedicated gluten-free menu, which is rarer than it should be for Japanese food. It's BYO, which keeps the bill down.
It's a dinner place, opening every evening from 5pm. Book on weekends, when the small room fills with regulars. If you're staying at the north end of Manly or around Queenscliff, it's one of the best-value dinners within walking distance.
