The local take
Alice Dumpling Bar is a Chinese dumpling restaurant at 43-45 North Steyne, between Hotel Steyne and Hemingway's, across the road from the beach. It started out as a much-loved pop-up on the South Steyne beachfront. That site closed in 2024 for redevelopment, and owner Henry Cai reopened Alice on North Steyne in 2025.
The menu is long and built around dumplings and buns: xiao long bao, pan-fried pork and garlic chive dumplings and steamed barbecue pork buns, plus seafood dishes such as honey king prawns and salt and pepper squid, and vegetarian options. It has both indoor and outdoor tables.
It's open every day from 11am to 9pm, and you can order through Uber Eats. There's also a sister restaurant, Little Alice Yum Cha, inside the Sebel at 8-13 South Steyne. Either is a good, inexpensive lunch between swims, with the beach just across the road.
