October is the month Manly flips into summer mode. The clocks go forward on the first Sunday, the school holidays wind down, and the water finally climbs back to a temperature most locals will swim in without complaint. This year it also brings something new: Surf + Sound, a festival spread across three weekends at Manly Wharf, which ends on a Halloween weekend that has more going on than any other weekend of the month.
Here's everything worth your time in Manly this October, in date order.
Night at The Barracks — Final Weekend, Friday 2 and Saturday 3 October
The open-air concert series on the old parade ground at North Head Sanctuary finishes this weekend. Friday 2 October is The Cruel Sea playing Three Legged Dog for its 30th anniversary, with Magic Dirt; Saturday 3 October closes the season with Jet, supported by Liquid Zoo. Both are ticketed, there are no walk-ups, and there's no parking without a pre-booked space — take the shuttle from Manly Wharf. Grand Final Sunday, the Clocks and a Long Weekend — Sunday 4 and Monday 5 October
Three things land on the same day.
Daylight saving starts at 2am on Sunday 4 October — the clocks go forward an hour, and the long light evenings are back.
It's grand final day at Accor Stadium. The NRLW Grand Final is the Roosters against the Broncos at 4pm, and the NRL Grand Final is the Roosters against the Newcastle Knights in the evening. Monday 5 October is Labour Day, a NSW public holiday, which makes this the first proper beach long weekend of the season — and the surf lifesavers are patrolling on public holidays as well as weekends now the season has started.
If you'd rather watch the sun go down than a football match, Q Station's Sunset Sessions start their season the same afternoon: live music from Tilli Kay at The Glasshouse on North Head, 3:30–7pm. Book ahead.
School Holidays End — Friday 9 October
The spring break finishes on Friday 9 October, and Term 4 starts on Tuesday 13 October. The first nine days of the month are busier than the rest — beaches, cafés and the ferry all run at holiday pace. If you're here with kids in the first week, our things to do with kids guide has the shortlist.
Two New Shows at MAG&M — Until Sunday 29 November
Manly Art Gallery & Museum on West Esplanade, a two-minute walk from the ferry, has two exhibitions that opened at the end of September and run right through October and November. Free, as MAG&M always is.
- Michael Muir: The Shape of Colour* — a survey of more than a decade of work by one of the Northern Beaches' best-known contemporary painters: bright colour, rich texture and dream-like landscapes.
- Girly in Manly* — Kate Bohunnis, Anne Ferran, Maddison Gibbs and Ebony Russell on femininity through inheritance, care, creativity and connection to place, starting from the colonial naming of Manly itself.
The public program around them is worth planning for:
- Artist in conversation: Michael Muir — Saturday 10 October, 2–3pm.
- Masterclass: Colour and Composition with Michael Muir — Monday 12 October, 10am–3pm. A full-day class; a second one runs on 16 November.
- Her Spin on Things, with Samantha May Wines — Thursday 22 October, 6–8:30pm. An evening event in the gallery.
- Life Drawing Studio continues fortnightly on Tuesday evenings through to December.
All are booked through the gallery. And *Chronos: Australian Ceramics from 1933* continues until March 2027 if you haven't caught it yet.
Surf + Sound — Friday 16 October to Sunday 1 November
The headline, and it's new: a festival built around Manly Wharf, spread across three weekends rather than crammed into one. The music is ticketed and all but one show is in the Felons Barrel Room on the wharf, doors 7pm:

The rest is free. The Jeremyville outdoor art trail — large-scale inflatables, sculptures and installations — runs the full seventeen days on the wharf, alongside five vintage Land Rover Defenders being painted live. And the final weekend moves to the sand: the Boardriders competition on Manly Beach on 31 October and 1 November, led by world champion Joel Parkinson, with open men's, women's and under-18 divisions. Manly Village Public School Markets — Saturday 17 October
The third-Saturday school markets, 8am–2pm at Darley Road and Wentworth Street — the same day as the Beautiful Girls show, so it's an easy all-day Saturday: markets in the morning, the beach in the afternoon, the wharf at night.
Q Station Sunset Sessions — Sunday 18 October
The second session of the season, with Gabe playing at The Glasshouse, 3:30–7pm. It's the best-value way to see the harbour at golden hour: music, food and wine on North Head with the city on the horizon. The next one is on Halloween.
Spookyween at Q Station — Sunday 25 October
A daytime trick-or-treat hunt for kids at the old Quarantine Station, 10am–3pm, $5, no booking — drop in any time. The gentle way to do Halloween before the tours the following weekend.
Halloween Weekend — Friday 30 October to Sunday 1 November
The busiest stretch of the month, because everything lands at once.
- Q Station Halloween tours, Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October. The adult tour is 90 minutes through the Quarantine Station's darkest stories, 15+, $50, with sessions from 7:30pm to 10pm. The family tour dials down the scares, runs at 6, 6:30 and 7pm, and costs $50 a head or $149 for a family. These sell out — book early.
- Saturday 31 October on the wharf: the Sounds Good DJs on the Felons jetty from 5pm, Yolanda Be Cool in the Barrel Room at night, and a Halloween-themed Sunset Session up at Q Station with Jordan & James.
- Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November on the beach: the Surf + Sound Boardriders competition.
- Sunday 1 November: GANGgajang and Winston Surfshirt close the festival.
If you're coming for more than one of these, leave the car at home. The ferry runs late, the wharf is where half of this is happening, and parking on a Halloween Saturday with a festival on is not a fight worth having.
Whales — The Last of the Southbound Run
The humpbacks keep coming south through October, many with calves, before the migration tails off into November. Fewer animals than the winter peak but some of the closest passes of the year, and you can usually book a boat the same day. North Head is still the best free lookout. The Water and Weather in October
October sits in the driest stretch of the Sydney year, and the ocean starts its climb back through 18–20°C — cool, but most locals are back in the surf by now without much ceremony. Markets Every Weekend
The Manly markets keep running through October: the craft and design market on the Corso and Sydney Road on weekends, and the fresh produce market on Sundays. Plus the school markets on the 17th, noted above.

- Felons run club, Wednesdays 6:15pm — free, social, all paces, from the brewpub on the wharf.
- InSitu drag bingo and trivia bottomless brunch — the first Saturday of the month, so Saturday 3 October, 1–3pm, $99. Bookings essential.
- Manly Skiff Club — trivia on Wednesdays from 7pm and live music on Sundays from 2 to 5pm, on the deck over the cove.
- Pub trivia most nights — ask at the bar.
Coming Up — November
Surf + Sound finishes on Sunday 1 November, and the Melbourne Cup is two days later on Tuesday 3 November — the Skiff Club already has tickets on sale for its Cup lunch. Michael Muir's second masterclass is on 16 November, and both MAG&M shows close on 29 November. Over at Bondi, Sculpture by the Sea runs from late October into November — an easy day trip if you're based in Manly.

October is when Manly remembers it's a summer town. The clocks go forward, the water warms up, and this year a whole new festival takes over the wharf for three weekends.
