Free Things to Do in Manly: A Local's Guide to the Best Day Out That Costs Nothing

The best free things to do in Manly — beaches, coastal walks, whales, rock engravings and harbour views for the price of a ferry tap. A local's guide.

Here's a secret the postcard-perfect suburbs of Sydney don't want you to know: Manly might be the best-value day out in the whole city. The beaches are free. The walks are free. The whales, the wildlife, the ancient rock carvings and some of the finest harbour views in Australia? All free. Spend wisely and the only thing you'll pay for all day is the ferry that gets you here, and even that feels like a bargain by the end.

Whether you're a backpacker counting coins, a family stretching the school holidays, or just someone who resents paying $8 for a bottle of water at a tourist trap, this is your guide to a full, glorious day in Manly for next to nothing.

First, the only thing you'll pay for: getting here

Half the joy of Manly is the journey. The ferry from Circular Quay to Manly is technically public transport, you just tap on with an Opal card or contactless card, but it doubles as the cheapest harbour cruise in Sydney. You'll glide past the Opera House, under the shadow of the Harbour Bridge, out through the Heads with the open Pacific rolling in, and into Manly Cove, all for the price of a standard fare (and capped on Sundays, if you time it right).

Tourists pay a small fortune for sightseeing cruises that show them less than this ferry does on its ordinary run. Sit up the back, on the left heading over, and enjoy the best-value view in the city. For the full breakdown of decks, timetables and hidden hacks, see our guide to riding the Manly ferry.

Free beaches and swimming (the whole point of Manly)

You could spend an entire day doing nothing but moving between Manly's beaches, and it wouldn't cost a cent.

Manly Beach is the headline act, a long golden sweep facing the ocean, patrolled by lifesavers, framed by those iconic Norfolk pines. Bodysurf the shore break, watch the surfers, or just lie on the sand and do gloriously little.

Around the headland at the southern end, Shelly Beach is the calmer, dreamier sibling: a small, sheltered, north-facing cove that's one of the only west-to-east-facing beaches in Sydney, protected inside the Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve. The water is clear, calm and alive with fish, perfect for a free snorkel if you've brought a mask.

For families, the harbour beaches of Manly Cove and Delwood offer flat, gentle water right by the ferry. And if you want a lap without a lane fee, the ocean rock pools nearby are free to all. Our full guide to swimming in Manly breaks down every spot by tide, wind and skill level.

Free coastal and harbour walks

Manly is stitched together by some of the best walking in Sydney, and every metre of it is free.

The Manly to Shelly Beach walk along the Cabbage Tree Bay boardwalk is the easy, unmissable one, a flat, twenty-minute stroll past little coves, rock platforms and, if you're lucky, blue gropers cruising the shallows below.

For something wilder, the North Head loop takes you into Sydney Harbour National Park, out to dramatic clifftop lookouts with the whole harbour and city laid out before you, arguably the best free view in Sydney. We've mapped the full loop in our North Head & Q Station guide.

And if you're feeling ambitious, the Spit to Manly walk is a 10km harbour epic past hidden beaches, bushland and ancient rock engravings, ending right back in town. A whole half-day of scenery for the cost of the bus to the start.

Free wildlife and nature

You don't need a paid tour to see Manly's best residents.

Whales, from roughly May to November, migrate right past the Heads, and North Head is one of the best free land-based whale-watching spots in Sydney. Bring binoculars, find a clifftop perch, and watch for the telltale spout on the horizon. No boat ticket required. Our full Manly whale watching guide has the best lookouts and the peak weeks.

Blue gropers, the big, curious, cobalt-blue fish that are the unofficial mascots of Cabbage Tree Bay, can often be spotted from the rocks or with a snorkel, entirely for free. If you want to meet them properly, read our blue groper snorkelling guide to Shelly.

And tucked into the bush near Grotto Point on the Spit to Manly walk are Aboriginal rock engravings, carved into the sandstone by the Gayamaygal people, the saltwater custodians of this Country. They're sacred, protected, and free to visit respectfully, look, don't touch.

Free things to do around town

You don't even have to leave The Corso to spend nothing well.

Wander The Corso, the pedestrian spine linking the ferry wharf to the ocean beach, and soak up the buskers, the passing parade and the salt-air buzz. Poke around the weekend markets when they're on. Watch the surfers from the promenade. Catch a free outdoor event or festival, Manly's calendar is full of them, especially over summer (our best time to visit Manly guide has the month-by-month rundown). And at the end of the day, find a grassy spot above the beach and watch the sunset paint the water. Best show in town, no ticket needed.

A perfect free day in Manly (sample itinerary)

  • Morning: Ferry over from Circular Quay (your one splurge), coffee optional. Start with a swim at Manly Beach.
  • Late morning: Walk the Cabbage Tree Bay boardwalk to Shelly Beach; snorkel or spot blue gropers from the rocks.
  • Midday: Pack a picnic and eat it on the grass above Shelly or on North Head with a view.
  • Afternoon: Hike the North Head loop for clifftop lookouts and, in season, whales from the headland.
  • Late afternoon: Amble back along The Corso, browse the shops and buskers, find a sunset spot.
  • Evening: Ferry home as the city lights come up.

Total spend: two ferry taps and whatever you chose to pack. Total payoff: one of the best days out in Sydney. Want the not-strictly-free version with the best coffee, lunch and sunset drink stops layered in? See our 24 hours in Manly itinerary.

A few tips to keep it free

  • Pack a picnic and a water bottle. Manly has plenty of free BBQs, shady grass and picnic tables, you don't need to buy lunch.
  • Bring your own snorkel and towel. Hiring gear adds up; owning it doesn't.
  • Check the Opal fare cap. Travel on the right day and your ferry fares can be capped, making the round trip even cheaper.
  • Use the free water bubblers and public toilets dotted along the beachfront and Corso.
  • Time it with a free event. Manly's festival and market calendar means there's often something on for nothing.
