The ferry is half the holiday.

A 30-minute glide past the Opera House and under the gaze of the Harbour Bridge, or 18 minutes flat if you're in a hurry. Either way, Sydney's most underrated experience and it costs less than your morning coffee.

The route

From Circular Quay to Manly Wharf

The Manly Ferry has been crossing this stretch of harbour since 1854, making it one of the oldest continuously-running ferry routes anywhere in the world. There are now two services that do the trip: the big, slow, beloved Freshwater-class boats run by Transport for NSW, and the sleek Manly Fast Ferry catamarans operated by NRMA. Both leave from Circular Quay. Both drop you straight into the heart of Manly.

As you leave the Quay the Opera House sails go by on your right, and the Harbour Bridge rises up behind you. After that it's open water, sandstone cliffs, and if the harbour's feeling generous, a pod of bottlenose dolphins surfing the wake. Tap on with an Opal card or a contactless credit card and find yourself a spot up top.

I grandi traghetti a due estremità verdi e oro sono in servizio dagli anni '80, e sono stati costruiti appositamente per questo. Scafi larghi che non temono le onde del porto, due ponti superiori aperti, sedili a panca in legno lucidato all'interno. La MV Freshwater, la MV Queenscliff e la MV Collaroy sono le originali; una nave di classe Emerald aggiornata subentra nei turni più tranquilli.

Una flotta di catamarani bassi, gialli e neri, che arrivano a Manly in 18 minuti esatti. Cabina interna climatizzata al piano inferiore, ponte aperto per prendere il sole al piano superiore e un piccolo bar che vende caffè, birra e vino sulla maggior parte delle corse. La scelta migliore se si arriva da un volo, si vuole correre contro il tramonto o semplicemente non si vuole aspettare.

Prendi il Freshwater all'andata (così l'Opera House e il Ponte ti scivolano lentamente accanto), e il Fast Ferry al ritorno se è tardi e sei stanco. Se lo fai una sola volta, fallo lentamente. Siediti sul ponte superiore, lato di tribordo, con un gelato dal chiosco. Quella è la cartolina.

Molti posti a sedere al di fuori degli orari di punta dei pendolari — anche alle 17:00 di venerdì il ponte superiore di rado è al completo.

Maltempo

Forti venti da sud o grandi mareggiate possono sospendere il Fast Ferry — il Freshwater continua a navigare praticamente in qualsiasi condizione.

Ultima barca per tornare

Se sei fuori dopo le 19:00, sei sull'F1. Se sei fuori dopo mezzanotte, sei in un Uber oltre il ponte (55-70 $).

Sunset sailing

The 5 to 7pm ferry back to the Quay, with the city skyline lighting up behind you, is one of the great cheap thrills of Sydney.

Dolphin watch

Pods of bottlenose muck about between Bradleys Head and the heads year-round. Mornings are your best shot. Keep an eye on the wake behind.

Sit upper deck, starboard

On the way over, the right-hand side of the upper deck gives you the Opera House up close, then proper open-ocean swell as you round Bradleys Head.

Kiosk on board

The Freshwater has a small bar and snack bar inside on the lower deck. Tooheys on tap, hot chips, ice cream. Cash-free.

Bring a jacket

Even in summer the breeze on the upper deck has a bit of bite once the sun drops. The headland between the heads catches the southerly.

Don't queue early

The ferries are big. 1,100 passengers on a Freshwater. Trust us, the boarding crush always finds a seat.
