The local take
Sunset Sabi is a loud, fun Japanese restaurant and bar at 26-28 Pittwater Road, a few minutes' walk north of the Corso. It sums itself up as "Sushi, Sake, Robata. A lot Japan, a little bit not", and the menu matches. Expect sushi rolls with unusual combinations, karaage and snacks from the robata grill, with sake, Japanese beer and the house cocktail, the sabirita.
It belongs to the Good Good Company group, which also runs Chica Bonita and Noon in Manly. Happy hour runs from 5 to 6pm on Fridays and from 4 to 5pm on weekends, with $5 beers, $5 snacks and $10 highballs.
Dinner is served every night, from 5.30pm Monday to Thursday, 5pm on Fridays and 4pm on weekends. Book through OpenTable, especially at weekends, when locals fill it. Groups can book a section or the whole venue. Being off the beachfront keeps the crowd more local than tourist.
