The local take
Cibaria is the big Italian on the beachfront at 55 North Steyne, on the ground floor of the Elysium Manly hotel. It comes from Maestro Hospitality, the group run by Alessandro and Anna Pavoni that's also behind a'Mare, Ormeggio at the Spit and Postino Osteria. It's laid out like an Italian piazza, with several venues under one roof rather than a single dining room.
The trattoria opens for lunch from 11.30am and dinner from 5pm. The kitchen is split along Italian lines: a friggitoria for fried snacks, a forneria for bread and pizza, osteria plates, pasta, and a grill for bistecca. Out front, the caffetteria does breakfast from 7am and panini through the day, and the gelateria scoops from 7am until late. 55 North, the cocktail bar, opens at 8am and runs late. The rooftop Terrazza is for private events.
Book the trattoria online. The gelato and coffee counter is walk-in or takeaway. It sits at the north end of the beach, a few minutes past the Corso, so it's calmer than the rooms on the Corso corner. Come for a long Italian lunch facing the surf, or just a gelato on the walk back from Queenscliff.
