August is the month people write off and locals quietly enjoy. It has the coldest water of the year and the fewest rainy days of the year, which tells you most of what you need to know: pack a jumper, expect sunshine. The whales are still going past North Head — in both directions this month, which only happens now — and Brookvale gets two Friday night home games under lights.
Here's everything worth your time in Manly this August, sorted by what closes soonest.
Last Weekend at the Gallery — Until Sunday 2 August
Three shows at Manly Art Gallery & Museum come down on Sunday 2 August, so this is your final weekend:
- Tamara Dean: Leave Only Footprints — the first survey exhibition of one of Australia's most acclaimed photomedia artists. If you only see one, see this.
- Min Wong: You Shall Definitely Pass — an immersive 'bath house' sculpture installed in the North Gallery.
- CEAD Collection Stories: Night Sky — coastal landscape after dark, drawn from the MAG&M collection.
MAG&M is on West Esplanade, two minutes from the wharf, open Tuesday–Sunday 10am–5pm. Free entry, as always.

Environmental Art & Design Prize — Opens Friday 7 August
This is the month's headline act. The Northern Beaches Environmental Art & Design Prize is one of Australia's leading competitions for art and design with an environmental focus, and the 2026 edition drew more than 700 submissions. The 170 finalists go on display from Friday 7 August through Sunday 20 September.
What's at stake: a $46,000 prize pool — $20,000 each for the visual arts and design winners, and $3,000 each for the People's Choice and Young Artist/Designer awards. Winners are announced on Friday 7 August.
Two venues: the Art and Design categories hang at MAG&M in Manly; the Young Artists & Designers category is up the road at Curl Curl Creative Space. Both free.
If you're in Manly on a wet afternoon this month, this is the answer. The People's Choice award means your vote counts for $3,000 of someone's year, so actually vote.
City2Surf — Sunday 9 August
Sydney's 14km run from Hyde Park to Bondi Beach is back on Sunday 9 August with around 90,000 runners, walkers and spectators. It happens entirely on the other side of the harbour — but it will absolutely affect your Sunday if you're planning to cross.
What it means for Manly: - Circular Quay is chaos from about 7am to midday. Runners, road closures, and every second person in a numbered bib. If you're catching the F1 ferry into the city that morning, go early or go late. - Coming the other way is the smart move. Manly on City2Surf Sunday is one of the quietest beach mornings of the year — half of Sydney is running to a different beach. If you want the Corso to yourself, this is the day. - Bondi is a write-off until evening. If the Bondi to Manly walk was on your list, do it any other weekend.
Sea Eagles at Brookvale — Friday 14 and Friday 28 August
Two home games at 4 Pines Park this month, both Friday nights at 6pm:

Manly are away the other two weekends — Perth on Saturday 8 August and Newcastle on Saturday 22 August — so these are the only two chances to see them at home before the season ends.
Getting there from Manly: Brookvale is about 10 minutes up the road. The B-Line and the 136/139 buses run from Manly Wharf and Manly Beach to Brookvale, and on a Friday night that beats driving — parking around the ground fills early and the streets are permit-restricted. Get the bus, walk the last few minutes with everyone else.
Before the game: the pubs along Pittwater Road fill from about 4:30pm. If you'd rather eat properly first, do it in Manly and travel up at 5.
A Friday night at Brookie in winter is the most local thing you can do in this postcode. It is loud, cold, and completely unlike the beach-town version of Manly visitors usually see.
Saturday 15 August — The Month's Big Saturday
Two things land on the same day.
Manly Village Public School Markets — the third Saturday of every month, which in August is the 15th. School grounds at Darley Road and Wentworth Street, run by the P&C. Books, plants, vintage clothes, bric-a-brac, homemade cakes, and the best sausage sizzle on the beaches. 8am–2pm.
Q Station Winter Session: 'Her Spin On Things' — an afternoon session at the old Quarantine Station on North Head, 2pm–6pm. Q Station's winter programming is one of the better-kept secrets up there, and the setting on a clear August afternoon — sandstone, harbour, the whole of Sydney across the water — does a lot of the work.
Do the markets in the morning, walk it off along the beach, then head up to North Head for the afternoon. That's a complete day.
Whale Watching — The Overlap Month
August is the month the migration doubles back on itself. The last of the northbound humpbacks are still heading up the coast, while the first southbound mothers are already coming back down with newborn calves alongside them. It's the only month you get both, and the southbound whales travel closer to shore.
From land, for free: North Head is the best vantage in Sydney — the Fairfax Walk lookouts put you on a clifftop directly over the migration route. Shelly Beach headland and the Manly Scenic Walkway both work too. Go in the morning before the wind gets up, and take binoculars.
On the water: operators run out of Manly Wharf through the season, which continues to around 10 November. Morning departures are calmer; afternoons get choppy.

The Water in August — Coldest of the Year
No point pretending otherwise. Manly's water bottoms out this month at roughly 16–18°C, hitting its lowest around the third week of August. Air temperatures average 8°C overnight and 18°C in the day, though clear August days regularly beat that.
The upside is real, though: August has the fewest rainy days of any month in Manly — under ten, on average. Cold and clear beats warm and wet, and the light in August is the best light of the year here.
If you're getting in: a 3/2mm steamer is the minimum, and a 4/3mm with boots is the honest recommendation for anything longer than a quick surf. Plenty of people still swim without one — the Bold & Beautiful crew swim Manly to Shelly at 7am every single morning of the year, August included. You're allowed to just watch.

Markets Every Weekend
Manly Markets run on the Corso and Sydney Road every Saturday and Sunday — arts, crafts, jewellery, ceramics, the handmade candle you didn't know you needed. Free entry, and it's undercover enough to survive a shower.
Manly Fresh Produce Markets run Sundays on Sydney Road and Short Street. Fruit, veg, bread, flowers, and a pastry stall that has cost this website a lot of money. Get there before 10am.

Weekly Events Worth Knowing About
Run Club at Felons Manly — Wednesdays 6:15pm. Free, social, all paces. Meet at the brewpub, run 5–8km along the beachfront, come back for a schooner. In August you'll want the schooner.
Bottomless Brunch Drag Bingo at InSitu — Saturdays, 1pm–3pm. Drag queens, bingo, bottomless brunch. Bookings essential.
Trivia: Tuesday and Thursday nights at Dee Why RSL, plus weekly trivia at most Manly pubs. Ask at the bar.
Also Worth Knowing
- No school holidays this month. NSW Term 3 runs straight through August — the next break isn't until late September. Beaches, cafés and the ferry are all noticeably quieter on weekdays as a result.
- Chronos: Australian Ceramics from 1933 continues at MAG&M alongside the Prize, running all the way to March 2027. Worth ten minutes while you're there.
- The Manly Bike Life Festival is an August fixture — a showcase of Sydney's cycling culture with a retro ride, stalls, maintenance workshops and free kids' bike tune-ups. Check locally for this year's date before you plan around it.

The Bottom Line
August is the quiet month with the good light. The gallery has the best show it will host all year, there's footy under lights at Brookvale on two Fridays, the whales are going both ways past the headland, and it barely rains. The water is genuinely cold — that's the trade, and it's a fair one.
