Manly Wharf Is No Longer Just a Ferry Stop — Here's Everything Going On

A few years ago you got off the ferry and walked straight past it. Today Manly Wharf is a destination in its own right — Felons Brewing Co.'s three-venue precinct, Hugos on the water, a hidden late-night bar called 1979, happy hours every weekday, live music four nights a week and a full calendar of community events. Here's the rundown.

For most of its life, Manly Wharf did one thing: it caught ferries. You arrived, you walked across the concourse, you headed up the Corso to the beach. The wharf itself was a transit point — a place to pass through, not a place to be.

That has changed. Quietly, then all at once. Felons Brewing Co. has built a three-venue precinct on the wharf — Felons Manly, Felons Seafood and the Felons Barrel Room — and added a hidden late-night cocktail bar called 1979. Hugos Manly continues to anchor the upper deck with Italian-leaning waterfront dining. There's a fish-and-chip shop, a Guzman Y Gomez for the post-ferry hunger, and a near-continuous program of live music, trivia, run clubs and Sunday family days. Locals now plan whole evenings — and whole Sundays — that never leave the wharf.

Here's the whole picture: what's open, when to come, the happy hours worth crossing the harbour for, and what's special on right now.

Why the wharf turned into a destination

Two things happened more or less at once.

First, Felons Brewing Co. — the Brisbane-born riverside brewery — landed at Manly Wharf and didn't do it by halves. They opened Felons Manly as the all-day flagship, then added Felons Seafood for a Mediterranean-tinged fish-led menu, then carved out the Felons Barrel Room for barrel-aged beers, live jazz and weekend long lunches. Together it's the biggest single hospitality footprint the wharf has ever had.

Second, the city rediscovered the harbour side of Manly. The ocean beach is still the postcard, but the wharf side is where the sun sets, where the water is glassy, and where the boats come in. That makes it the natural evening venue — and the operators noticed. Hugos Manly leaned into its upper-deck position, and a hidden cocktail bar called 1979 quietly opened behind an unmarked door for the after-dinner crowd.

The line-up: what's actually here

A quick tour of the current tenants, working from the ferry gate outward.

  • Felons Manly — The all-day flagship. Open Monday to Sunday from 11am until late. Thoughtful, produce-driven menu, Felons beer brewed in-house, live music four nights a week.
  • Felons Seafood — Fresh Australian seafood, prepared simply with a Mediterranean touch. Tuesday to Sunday, 12pm–11pm; closed Mondays.
  • Felons Barrel Room — Barrel-aged beers, big shareable plates, live jazz on Thursdays and trivia on Wednesdays. Wednesday to Friday from 4pm; Saturday and Sunday from 11am.
  • 1979 — The hidden one. A late-night cocktail bar tucked behind an unmarked door — find it, knock, settle in. Currently 3pm–1am Monday to Saturday and 3pm–midnight Sunday; from 1 February the hours shift to 7pm onwards.
  • Hugos Manly — Italian-leaning waterfront dining, curated cocktails, the wine list to match. Lunch Tuesday to Sunday, dinner every night. The upper-deck terrace at sunset is the photo every visitor takes home.
  • Manly Fish & Chipper — Your local fish-and-chip shop, on the wharf. Every day, 11am–9pm. Run by the Felons Seafood team, so the fish is the same quality as the sit-down menu.
  • Guzman Y Gomez — Open from 7am every day, late into the night Friday to Sunday. The default breakfast burrito on the way back to the ferry.

Happy hours worth crossing the harbour for

The wharf has become genuinely competitive on early-evening pricing. These are the regular happy hours as they currently run — always worth a quick check on the venue's socials before you board the ferry.

  • Felons Manly & Felons Barrel Room — Monday to Friday, 4–6pm. $10 cold pints, $10 wines, $15 signature cocktails. The default after-work move on the wharf — clock off, bring your mates, stay a while.
  • 1979 Happy Hour — Weekday happy hour at the hidden bar. $15 cocktails, $9 spirits and wines, $8 beers. Quieter than Felons, with proper cocktails.
  • Nightcap at 1979 — Sunday nights only, run for and by the hospo crowd. Rotating food and drink specials each week — $8 beers, spirits and wines, cocktails from $12. Worth a ferry trip on its own.
  • Park & Dine — Not a happy hour, but worth knowing: 3 hours parking at the Manly Wharf car park for $15 when you dine on the wharf Monday to Friday. Enter after 12pm, exit before 9pm.

A small piece of local knowledge: most wharf happy hours wind down right as the southerly change typically arrives in summer (late afternoon). Grab your spot on the deck before then, not after.

Regular events and what's on every week

The wharf now runs an almost continuous program of recurring events. The reliable ones:

  • Live Music at Felons Manly — Wednesday through Sunday, every week. A mix of acoustic acts, full bands and some of Sydney's best local musicians. Free entry.
  • Felons Trivia (Felons Manly) — Every Tuesday from 7pm. Beer, merch and Felons vouchers as prizes. Free to play, bookings essential.
  • Barrel Room Trivia (Felons Barrel Room) — Every Wednesday from 7pm. Cash jackpot, $25 meal-and-pint deal. Walk-ins welcome but book if you can.
  • Felons Run Club with Pat Curtin — Every Wednesday. Meet 6:15pm, 6:30pm start. 5km run or walk, free refreshment at the finish line.
  • Barrel Room Jazz Club — Every Thursday night at Felons Barrel Room. Laid-back live jazz, dim lights, proper setting.
  • Felons Community Day — Every Sunday at Felons Manly from 11am. Free kids' face painting, live music, and a meat-tray raffle. Walk in any time.
  • Family Fun Day at Felons Barrel Room — Every Sunday. Kids eat free 11am–3pm, live reptile shows at 12pm and 1pm, free face painting and games.
  • Manly Lifestyle Club — A wellness community based at Felons Manly: movement, run sessions and social events by the ocean. Check their site for the week's program.
Felons Manly at night — long communal tables, soft lighting, ferries pulling in outside.

What's special coming up

A few things to watch in the next few months — most are confirmed; the smaller ones get added to wharf venues' Instagram feeds week by week.

  • $8 Fish & Chip Day at Manly Fish & Chipper — Tuesday 26 May. $8 fish and chips for one day only, from 11am until sold out. Get in early.
  • State of Origin, Live & Loud — Game 1 kicks off Wednesday 27 May at 8pm. Felons Manly and Felons Barrel Room are screening every match, free entry, big screens and big energy.
  • Win a Waterfront Experience — Buy any Manly Wharf gift voucher of $100 or more and you're automatically in the draw for a two-night stay at the Manly Pacific Hotel plus $4,000 in Manly Wharf gift vouchers. Plus there's currently a bonus $20 voucher for every $100 spent.
  • Whale-watching peak season (June–September). Cruises depart directly from the wharf, weather permitting. The earlier in the day, the calmer the swell — and the better the chances of a humpback breach close to the boat.
  • Manly Jazz Festival (Long Weekend in early October). Australia's longest-running community jazz festival uses the wharf as a key stage — free concerts on the forecourt, late-night sets, brass bands wandering the Corso.
  • NYE on the harbour. The wharf is one of the few places in Sydney where you can watch both the 9pm family fireworks and the midnight show with a glass of something cold in hand. Wharf venues run ticketed events; book by October or miss out.
  • Australia Day on the harbour (26 January). Ferrython, tall ships, harbour parade. The wharf is the best free vantage point in town that's still on the water.

How to play a wharf evening

A loose template that works almost any week of the year:

1. Catch the 5.30pm ferry from Circular Quay. You'll arrive around 6pm with the sun low and the light on your side. 2. Happy hour first. Pints and $15 cocktails at Felons Manly or the Barrel Room (4–6pm weekdays). Sit outside if you can. 3. Dinner on the water. Hugos on the upper deck for a date, Felons Seafood for fish, Felons Manly if you want to stay put with the band. 4. A nightcap at 1979. Find the unmarked door. This is the locals' move and it shows. 5. Catch a late ferry back. Sydney Ferries run every 20–30 minutes until just past midnight on weekends. The harbour at night, from the upper deck of a Freshwater, is one of those things you never get tired of.

A few honest caveats

  • Weekends are busy. Saturday from 2pm and Sunday from 1pm — especially during Felons Community Day and the Family Fun Day — the wharf is full. Book if you want a table.
  • Weather still wins. A southerly that arrives at 5pm will empty the outdoor decks fast. The good news: Felons Manly and the Barrel Room both have substantial indoor space, and the harbour itself is more sheltered than the ocean beach.
  • Cashless almost everywhere. Bring a card. Most venues are tap-only at the bar.
  • The last ferry is earlier than you think. Check the timetable on your phone before that last round at 1979.

The bottom line

Manly Wharf has become one of the most genuinely useful destinations in Sydney — a place that works for a quick weekday happy hour, a Wednesday run, a Thursday jazz set, a Sunday with the kids, or a long birthday dinner on the water. It's a wharf that quietly grew into a precinct, and the city is still catching up to it.

If you haven't been on the harbour side of Manly in a couple of years, you'll barely recognise it. Catch the next ferry over and see for yourself — ideally just before sunset.
