The local take
The Herring Room is a family-owned seafood restaurant at 94 Pittwater Road, a few blocks north of the Corso and a block back from the beach. It opened in August 2015, and the dining room has a 1920s-inspired look and an old-fashioned approach to hospitality. Its own line is that "you don't experience restaurants like this anymore."
The kitchen works with sustainably sourced seafood from Australia and New Zealand, paired with local, seasonal produce. The menu changes with what's available, so check the website for the current one.
It's open for dinner from Tuesday to Saturday, from 5.30pm, and for lunch on Fridays and Saturdays from 12pm. It's closed on Sundays and Mondays. The room is small and fills with locals, so book ahead, especially for a weekend dinner. It's a good choice for a special occasion or a long Friday lunch, and it's quieter than the beachfront.
