The local take
Banco is a 32-seat wine bar and restaurant at 17B Whistler Street, behind the Corso, easy to spot by the neon wine bottle over the door. It was founded by award-winning bartender Kurtis Bosley, and Executive Chef Dan Webb cooks seasonal food over fire with a modern British slant.
The drinks are as important as the food. The wine list leans towards natural, biodynamic and low-intervention wines from small producers, and there are signature cocktails on tap.
It opens every day from 4.30pm until late, with a daily happy hour from 4.30 to 6pm. Book through OpenTable, especially at weekends, because the room is small. Come for a glass and a few plates before dinner elsewhere, or stay for a full meal from the fire.
