The practical bits, sorted.

When to come, how long to stay, and how to do Manly without any of the friction.

When to visit

Summer

Dec – Feb

26°C average. Peak. Book accommodation 2–3 months ahead.

Autumn

Mar – May

March is the sweet spot. Warm water, lighter crowds, and the Manly Surf Open.

Winter

Jun – Aug

Mild (16–19°C). Great for walks, café mornings, and migrating whales offshore.

Spring

Sep – Nov

Warming up. Jazz Festival in October is a perfect excuse to visit.

How long to stay

  • Day trip — Ferry over by 10am, walk to Shelly, lunch on the beach, ferry back at sunset.
  • Overnight — Add a sunset drink and dinner. Stay near the Corso for the easy stroll back.
  • Weekend — Tackle the full Spit Bridge walk, a North Head morning, and a long lunch at Hugos.

Getting around

  • On foot — Most of Manly is walkable from the wharf in 15 minutes.
  • By bike — Manly is bikeable; rentals on West Esplanade.
  • By bus — The B-Line up to the Northern Beaches every few minutes.
  • Rideshare — Uber and DiDi work fine; expect surge on Friday nights.

With kids

The Shelly Beach rock pools are a soft introduction to ocean life. Manly SEA LIFE Sanctuary is on the wharf. The ferry itself is free entertainment for an hour.

With dogs

Off-leash areas at Little Manly Beach (early/late) and the northern end of Manly Beach in summer. Many cafés on Whistler Street welcome dogs at outdoor tables.
